18th May 2007

The DfES has published the results of its mis-named consultation on the definition of full time education in independent schools. Only two local authorities and three independent schools choose to submit responses, whilst 75 home educating parents and a further 67 other individuals submitted responses, along with a number of voluntary and public organisations. The overwhelming opinion of respondents was that the DfES' suggestions were ill-thoughout and that phrases such as ‘major part of a child’s education’ were impossible to define. In a move which some might regard as a reaction to the DfES home education consultation document which was broadly welcomed within the home education community, The Guardian reports that educators fear for standards of home schooling.

The DfES today announced the publication of their long-awaited consultation on Home Education. Further information and a copy of the consultation document can be obtained from the DfES. The home educating community has until 31 July 2007 to respond, with publication of the findings scheduled for something during Autumn 2007. Home Service will be sending an official response which will be drafted collaboratively by Home Service members. For further information members should visit the Home Service bulletin board.

Department for Education and Skills research commissioned to discover how many children are being taught outside formal schooling has concluded that whilst numbers may range between 7,400 and 34,400, there is actually no accurate way of telling how many children are being home educated in England. 2nd February 2007

The Scottish Executive is undertaking a review of the 2004 document Guidance on the Circumstances in which parents may Choose to Educate their Children at Home. Christian home educating families in Scotland should click HERE to visit the Consultation web site where they can download the document and respond online. The deadline for responses is the 14th February 2007.

17th January2007

The government has published a Consultative paper which could lead to far reaching changes relating to the definition of what constitutes "full time education". The DfES wants responses by the 22nd February.
